BT's Winter Precautions Under Attack Once Again

There never seems to be a year during which BT is not found wanted when it comes to protecting its work-force from inclement weather and snow and ice. It's policy appears in practice to be totally inadequate and has led to staff injuries each year. Furthermore, the agency working on behalf of BT Property and responsible for the BT Estate is found wanting not only in its lack of planning and resourcing but in its lack of consultation with Union Safety Reps at local level.

The NW BTU H&S Co-ord has been tackling this problem for many years and still finds lessons are never learnt by BT Property and that Monteray seem unable if not, deliberately, neglecting to co-ordinate with CWU and Connect union safety reps. Often the excuse given is that they have tried, but been unable to contact the relevant person at local level.

The whole issue of winter precautions to protect the BT Estate and BT employees from injury and ill-health tends to be clouded by prevarication, excuses and lack of responsibility as far as the BT Union's are concerned.

Derek Maylor, Chair of the NW BTU H&S Co-ord told Unionsafety this week that, "It seems clear to the Co-ord, that much of the BT estate building plans are not being fully reviewed on an annual basis and when they have been, union safety reps have not been contacted and consulted."

Derek confirmed that the situation is under continual review by the Co-ord and the BT Unions nationally, adding:

"After March we [CWU] will be asked to report back nationally with a list of buildings in the patch and if the plan for each have been reviewed and, secondly, if the CWU were included in that review."

With the CWU Branch AGMs season about to start, no doubt the issue of BT's Winter Precautions and health and safety in general will be in the minds of Branch Officers and attending branch members alike.

In the meantime, BT Property remain unable to ensure that all its buildings and car parks are adequately protected from snow and ice and inclement weather. Source: Unionsafety
